Short answer: The usual filing deadline for 2026 individual returns is expected to be April 15, 2027 (a Thursday; we assume the usual date and did not read an IRS 2027 calendar). The IRS says an extension request by the April date gives you until October 15 to file without penalties, but the extension is only for filing: pay what you owe by the April date.
Documents to have before claiming the deductions
- W-2: expected by February 1, 2027 with box 12 TT and TP and box 14b (page).
- 1099s for self-employed workers: the 1099-NEC/MISC instructions have new boxes for tips and overtime (we covered that in our 1099 guides).
- Your own tip records (reporting to employer).
- Schedule 1-A (walk-through).
If you can't file on time
File for an extension by the April deadline using IRS Free File, Form 4868 or another method listed by the IRS. An extension doesn't stop interest on tax paid late (general IRS rule; not verified in the page read).
FAQ
Can I file without a W-2? Not covered; see the page on W-2s that don't show tips or overtime separately.
What if I filed already without the deduction? See the amended return page.
What we could not verify
- The IRS 2027 filing-season calendar and the 2026 Schedule 1-A.
- Interest on late payments (general statement only).
