Short answer: The IRS instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3 (2026) say the due date for filing 2026 Forms W-2 with the Social Security Administration is February 1, 2027 (paper or electronic), and that employers must generally furnish Copies B, C and 2 to employees by February 1, 2027 (properly addressed and mailed on or before the due date counts). January 31, 2027 is a Sunday, so February 1 is a Monday.
What to look for on your 2026 W-2
- Box 12, code TT: total qualified overtime compensation.
- Box 12, code TP: total cash tips reported to the employer.
- Box 14b: Treasury Tipped Occupation Code(s). See our code guide.
If it doesn't arrive
Employers may furnish forms any time after employment ends if you left before December 31, 2026 (the instructions also describe this case). Contact your employer first. If your W-2 doesn't show tips or overtime separately, see what to do.
FAQ
Can an employer get more time? The instructions say extensions to file with the SSA are not automatic.
Does the date apply to 1099 workers? No; this page is about W-2s. Contractors receive 1099s (see our 1099-NEC guides).
What we could not verify
